Prop. 1a - Recent Media Coverage

Historic, Bipartisan Agreement Means Campaign will Now Support Proposition 1A – Prop 65 No Longer Needed.

Recently, on a bipartisan vote and with strong backing from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senate Constitutional Amendment 4 (Torlakson) was passed. This historic agreement will place a new local government revenue protection measure on the November Ballot – which will appear as Proposition 1A. After months of hard-fought negotiations, Republicans, Democrats, local government leaders, public safety, healthcare, business and labor advocates all agreed on this new measure as a better, more flexible ballot initiative to protect local tax dollars and local services from continued raids by the State Legislature.

As we've reported, our campaign committee was set up to support the goal of passing a strong constitutional protection measure this November – whatever the best vehicle is to achieve that goal. We have determined that Proposition 1A is the better alternative to achieve this goal because it brings the broad, bipartisan support of Governor Schwarzenegger, legislators and local officials. We need the support and involvement of this diverse coalition to gain voter approval of this measure in November.

Many of you have been actively involved in the efforts to qualify and place Proposition 65 on the ballot and to promote this measure. Your efforts are the only reason we were able to come to this historic agreement on Proposition 1A – and why our prospects for passing a local government protection initiative this November are now stronger than ever. With the Governor's leadership and the continued support of allies like you, we can now focus on the most important goal that we set out to accomplish – protecting local tax dollars and local government services from continued raids by the State Legislature!
